Greetings:
FIRST st of all, on behalf of the visitor services staff here at John Day
Fossil Beds National Monument, a notice:
"John Day Fossil Beds NM is looking for 2 seasonal interpreters/park
rangers to work with the public, lead hikes and tell the story of the
geological and paleontological history of the John Day Basin, click on the
link to see the full announcement." These would be uniformed positions
working with the public, largely at the new Paleontology Center, but
typically includes a smattering of fieldwork with us. The below link is
active for 14 days.

If you are interested in these, contact either Sarah_Herve at nps.gov or
Lia_Vella at nps.gov. I know nothing more!
SECONDLY, I plan to hire 2 or 3 student workers this summer (now that I
have my budget) as museum technicians, and am interested in paleontology
students. We'll have people doing lab, curatorial, and fieldwork with an
emphasis on the latter this year. These will be competitive STEP program
hires, which stands for the Student Temporary Employment Program. I'll
need your application (which you can download at USA Jobs, form OF-612, or
admin here can snailmail you a copy) , and you Must have a certification of
enrollment whatever level of undergrad or grad school you are. We'll
probably run these from 01 April to late Sep., depending on your needs, and
ours, and how my budget holds up. If you wish to talk about these, write
me at below.
FINALLY, I've gotten several emails from concerned folk re: NPS
paleontology programs and "Is you guys still gots a job" kinds of queries
.... ?
Be advised that what happens at one or more parks is not necessarily
indicative of the health of the Servicewide program. For example, John Day
has four permanent paleontology positions, and our Core Operations study
(done a couple of years ago) calls for an Increase in our efforts, as does
the Museum Management Plan and the General Management Plan. It may be that
certain Regional offices have directed their parks and monuments to go in a
different direction, but in many parks we see an enhanced attention to NPS
sponsored paleontological work. That's all I'd better say, but wanted to
alleviate concerns about the health of the organization as a whole!
cheers
Ted
